Ilya Dobrovitsky

Ilya Dobrovitsky was a prize winner at the All-State, Maryland MTNA Competition. He further won many competitions as a student at the Peabody Preparatory-such as the Concerto Competition which resulted in solo performances with the Peabody Youth Orchestra. Ilya was also a member of the Arts for Talented Youth program, and won the Dean's Recognition Award at the Peabody Preparatory. Furthermore, while studying at Peabody Conservatory, Ilya has received the J.C. Van Hulstein Award, for outstanding achievement in string playing, and was also awarded the Lindred Scott Bendann Endowed Scholarship. In 2009, as a member of the chamber ensemble Ossia-Eastman School of Music's student-run, new music ensemble-Ilya appeared on the classical music-dedicated, WXXI-FM radio show (Rochester), "Backstage Pass", hosted by J. Figueras. Ilya has also participated in numerous international festivals such as: Indiana University String Academy, International Masterclass (Vastervick, Sweden), Shuan Yin Music Festival (Taipei, Taiwan), ENCORE School for Strings, Summit Music Festival, and Bowdoin Music Festival.

In an orchestral setting, Ilya has worked with such conductors as: Jaime Laredo, Gustav Meier, and Marin Alsop. Recently (2010), Ilya has been involved in a commercial recording of Benjamin Boretz’s Violin Concerto (1956), with violinist and soloist, Charles Castleman. To continue, in 2007, as a member of Peabody Symphony Orchestra, Ilya played at the Kennedy Center Honors-honoring the pianist Leon Fleisher. This event was televised nationwide. Later the same year, Ilya was appointed to the position of associate concertmaster of the Summit Festival Senior Orchestra. As a member of various orchestras, Ilya has collaborated with such soloists as: Yuuki Wong, John Shirley-Quirk, Benjamin Pasternack, Marina Piccinini, Jonathan Biss, and Charles Castleman.

Born in Moscow, Russia into a musical family, Ilya Dobrovitsky began his studies at the Gnessin School of Music. Upon immigration to USA, Ilya continued his studies at the Peabody Preparatory, then at Peabody Conservatory, of Johns Hopkins University, and is currently studying at the Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester). Ilya's teachers have included: Natalia Fischtengoltz, Eleonora Polonsky, Leri Slutsky, Keng-Yuen Tseng, and Victor Danchenko. Currently, Ilya is studying at Eastman School of Music with Mikhail Kopelman. Among the many artists in whose master classes Ilya has been fortunate to participate, Ilya has played for such noted artists as: Mikhail Kopelman, Aaron Rosand, Sylvia Rosenberg, Juliette Kang, Stephen Rose, and William Preucil. To continue, in the field of chamber music, Ilya has been coached by: Mikhail Kopelman, Thomas Kraines, Erich Eichorn, Ellen Mack, Michael Kannen, Maria Lambros, and Ralph Fielding.

Ilya's other musical interests include studies of composition-which he began from a very early age, studying with his mother, Marina Mlodik, a graduate of Merzlyakovsky Conservatory College (majoring in theory and composition), and violin pedagogy. Ilya Dobrovitsky plays on a modern instrument, made by the maker Terry Borman.
